COLOR WITHOUT COMPROMISE
In 2012 we introduced the world’s first bluesign® certified silks. Since then we’ve dyed over 4.5 million garments without hazardous chemicals using less water and less energy.
Why the Bluesign® system matters:
- It starts with good dyes.
Bluesign has one of the most stringent lists of restricted chemicals for dyeing and finishing. Using safer chemistry from the start means there’s less to clean up in the wastewater.
- And it reduces water and energy use.
Textile dyeing, fabric preparation and finishing often require high heat and large quantities of water. By increasing efficiency, the bluesign® system helps to minimize the total environmental impact of this resource-intense phase of textile production.
Our Bluesign Dyehouses
In 2012 we began working with a single bluesign® certified dyehouse that specialized in silk. Now we dye a broad range of fabrics—organic cottons, organic linens, recycled nylon—at as many as 10 dyehouses in 4 countries.
Beyond Bluesign: Our Safe Chemistry Program
Not every dyehouse is willing to pay the cost of bluesign® certification. We’re taking action in these ways:
- Every mill that dyes our clothes is asked to adhere to the Bluesign Restricted Substance List.
- 9 non-certified mills have agreed to go further. They’re using the web-based bluefinder® tool to source the safest possible chemicals.
- Several of our best-selling fabrics—Organic Handkerchief Linen,* Fine Tencel Jersey, Viscose Jersey—are dyed using the bluefinder® tool.
- We verify the chemistry behind these fabrics through independent tests and third-party factory audits.
*Yarn-Dyed Organic Handkerchief Linen is not currently dyed using the bluesign® tool.
