1+1=1. The Art of the Matching Set.

What if your jumpsuit came in two pieces? It would be just as easy, and twice as versatile. Enter the matching set—a simple, timeless way to get dressed.

Just like jumpsuits are synonymous with ease, matching sets offer similar polish—and even more options. Two pieces that take the thinking out of getting dressed, plus the ability to mix with your everyday staples? Sounds like a win-win. Whether you’re drawn to a monochromatic look or just want to streamline your morning routine, the matching set has already done half the work for you. Achieve a look that simplifies your wardrobe—and your life.

BEHIND THE DESIGN

At EILEEN FISHER, we design our line as a system of shapes that work together—and matching sets have always been at the heart of what we do. Eileen started her collection in 1984 with four linen pieces meant to be worn with each other—not to mention everything else in your closet. Our designers continue to evolve this idea when they consider which pieces to add to the line.

“One of the criteria for choosing a base fabric is whether you can make a top and bottom with it. If not, it’s less versatile,” says Marie Shinohara, director of woven and knit design at EILEEN FISHER. Designers spend hours playing with silhouettes to determine which proportions work together in signature fabrics that we turn to season after season. This means you can spend less time figuring out which shapes work together and more time playing with color or fabric. “A lot of people might be intimidated by head-to-toe sets, but they’re surprisingly effortless.” Bottom line: If one of our fabrics comes in separates, the pieces can always be worn together or apart.

START WITH FABRIC

Wearing a single fabric from head to toe is an easy way to look polished. It’s all about choosing the fabric that fits your agenda. Packing for a sunny weekend getaway? A linen or cotton set easily rolls up in your suitcase and is endlessly versatile. Need an outfit for a big night out? A matching silk top and skirt is elegant without too much fuss. In a nutshell, fabric is the ultimate tool to help you meet the moment.

Want to add more interest to a simple set? Textures can change the game. Look for fabrics with ribbing or other stitch detailing, like our Ribbed Organic Cotton in a mock neck top and wide-leg pant. The texture makes this outfit feel sophisticated enough for work, while still being easy enough for an evening on your couch.

CHOOSE YOUR PALETTE

Choosing a versatile color palette is key to building a more fluid wardrobe—one that works for your lifestyle. Going head to toe in a bold shade elevates fabrics you might normally associate with loungewear. Choose Cozy Brushed Terry Hug in a pink that pops for a look that’s overtly striking—even if your main objective is comfort (don’t worry, we won’t tell). In a muted berry color, the same fabric is quietly sophisticated.

At EILEEN FISHER, we design colors to go with our neutrals. That way, you can feel confident investing in a bold shade, because you’ll always be able to pair with other pieces in your closet. So if you wake up one morning to find your mood does not match your favorite set in Cinnabar, just throw on the top with a charcoal pant and don’t look back.

Throw a luxurious cardigan over a set (like this one in Cozy Brushed Terry) for an elevated look.

Whether you prefer to use fabric or color as a starting point, the right matching set will help you feel put together while staying true to your personal style. Our timeless shapes in signature fabrics are designed to be worn together or apart, across seasons and years. Simply put, a set takes the guesswork out of getting dressed, so you can achieve an elevated look without much effort or planning. And frankly, anything that gives you five minutes back in the morning is worth the investment.
