My bad
I take full responsibility for not noticing two things -- this vest does NOT have side slits and it does NOT have pockets. I assumed it had one or the other, maybe both. Patch pockets would be perfect on this, as I fully intended to wear it open as a duster vest over the matching pants, while traveling, and I didn't want to be hiking this vest up to get to the pants pockets. I do not like the ties on the sides but planned to cut them off, which would have been easy. Returned.
