Beautiful coat, but not what it used to be
20ish years ago, I had an open front, ankle length wool coat from EF that I loved, but at some point, for some reason, I gave it away and I have been looking for another one ever since. Whenever EF comes out with the Icon coat, I try it, but they never seem to be the same as the one I had years ago. This really is a great coat, but I think I would like this coat much more if I didn't have the older version to compare it to. I probably would have kept it, but it just misses the mark for me in too many ways. The fabric is stretchy, a little scratchy and not as cozy as the original; the fit is generous, but not oversized enough for my preference; the length is too short for me (5'8"); and the long side slits just seem odd for outwear.

Good new version Icon coat
I have an old Icon coat so have a comparison for this new version. First of all, I wish the pockets were like the older version. Secondly, I made the mistake of reading reviews that said this Icon runs small and advised to order 1-2 sizes larger than usual--- so I ordered one size up---this was a mistake, although one I can live with---reviewers must be very large in their mid-sections for this to be true. I wish the gray was a wee bit darker, although I can live with that too. I love that it is wool, that it has a relaxed design, like the old Icons, and the length is great. I do wish it came in some other colors (years ago there was an Icon coat in a rich yellow that I STILL regret not buying)---would love to see in dark or medium-dark blue, especially in the older pocket style. Easily more than half of my wardrobe is Eileen Fisher and I still have and wear pieces that are ~2 decades old--I just take very good care of them. Thank you for the Icon coats!

Worried about longevity of fabric
I ordered the color wren. It was a bit darker then I anticipated. However, the reason I returned was the regenerated wool has a very rough/slubbed finish. I love EF and support the ways in which it supports the planet. This wool made me wonder if it would have problems with wear, shedding and catching on things.

Ery nice coat but…
I have always loved EF’s boiled wool coats and jackets, and still wear one I bought some ten years ago. The current version is very nice but I am returning it because the fabric is disappointingly lightweight. My 10 year-old + coat is much more substantial and still keeps me warm in those transitional periods between fall/winter and winter/ spring. The one I am returning is little warmer than a midweight sweater—not too useful in a northern climate.

Material: too thin and extreme fiber shedding
I love the style and angled pockets. I am really tired of the big square pockets that make everything look like a bathrobe or lab coat. The material is way too thin, and the Dove color sheds terribly! I tried this coat on with a black long sleeve cotton tee and WOW, it was incredible how much it shed all over my tee and pants!!!! I’m glad I had this experience at home and not out. It would have been very embarrassing. Hopefully next year EF will make this coat out of the Doubleface Wool as in the EF cloud vest. That material is wonderful, thick without bulk, so soft, cozy and warm. The material used for this coat is more like burlap. Also, I think I should mention that this material although described as “Boiled Wool” is not the same material as EF boiled wool pants. Boiled wool pants is of a superior fabric to this. I returned this coat, and fingers crossed for next year.
